LESLIE C. ALLEN is Professor of Old Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary. Formerly he was Lecturer in Hebrew, Aramaic & Judaism at London Bible College, where he has taught since 1960. He holds the M.A. degree from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, in Classics & Oriental Studies. His Ph.D. is from the Univ. College of London, in Hebrew. this avid reader LOVED it!

I have obsessively read all 8 of the Heku books in a little over a month's time. Although I do a lot of leisure reading, I am not often absorbed in the book. This series has had me completely entranced from beginning to end. Although all the books are quite long, there is none of the hated & tedious lengthy descriptions that you will find in the majority of other novels. The series was originally meant to be ended with book #7, but gladly it did not, as book #8 was the best so far, in my opinion! If there were another 20 in the series, I would happily read every one, I enjoy them so much. I very highly suggest them!

Book 4

Book 4 is when you get into the nitty gritty of the Equites faction. It's the start of the larger books of the heku series and well worth it! I've read them all twice and every time I find new things to marvel at. Seems Emily and Chevalier start to get more comfortable with each other, so there's less violence between the two and more true-life interaction. These characters have become real to me and as I read its so easy to lose myself in this world. Ahhhh to have Chevalier's money.

I can honestly say that I've not been able to put this series down. I have read all 9 books within 2 weeks. I eat, breathe, sleep the lives of Emily, Chevalier and the rest of the heku. You will not be disappointed in this book or any of the others in the series. Be ready for late nights reading by a booklight until your eyes are falling shut!

He discusses her childhood, her career as an editor (highlighting her encouragement of black women writers), and he gives a very brief outline of each of her books and its critical reception, from The Bluest Eye to Beloved. Of course, the climax comes when she is awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, the first African American to win it. Readers will make readers think about black history, black writers, and, especially black women writers. A good choice for older reluctant readers and for use in adult literacy classes.
