INSIGHTFUL PRESENTATION OF SEVEN WOMEN PHILOSOPHERS

Margaret Atherton has written and compiled an excellent introduction to the work of a number of women philosphers of the 17th and 18th centuries.

The book contains a biographical introduction, followed with selections from one of the works of seven women philosophers: Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia, Margaret Cavendish, Anne Viscountess Conway, Damaria Cudworth (Lady Masham), Mary Astell, Catherine Trotter Cockburn, and Lady Mary Shepherd.

Atherton's own comments are frequently insightful: "Perhaps it is also unusual that only one of these women, Catherine Trotter Cockburn, was the mother of a large family. The others were either childless or had only one child."

The book contains numerous historical "nuggets," as well. For example, Atherton notes that "Descartes' "Passions of the Soul" is said to derive from his conversations with Elisabeth (of Bohemia), and he thought sufficiently well of her to dedicate his magnum opus, Principles of Philosophy, to her." She notes that Leibniz also wrote that "My philosophical views approach somewhat closely those of the late Countess of Conway."

This is an excellent selection and introduction to this group of women philosophers.

Required Reading

This book is, to my mind, essential for anyone serious about philosophy, and even more critical for anyone who cares about early modern philosophy. The selections contained herein are excellent, and naturally tie in with the major male thinkers of the time. The book should be required in every Modern Philosophy Survey course.
Of particular interest to me is how devastating Elizabeth's correspondence with Descartes is. Top shelf philosophical thought, without question.

The origional German edition is cheaper and not much more difficult to use.

The original "Handbuch der literarischen Rhetorik" is far and away the finest reference work on canonical rhetorical forms. But at the only price for which it is offered here, namely $1,202.00, one would really be far better off brushing up on one's German, Latin, Greek or French, since the work is indexed in all of those languages, although, strangely enough, not also in English.

Diversity rather than unity is taken to be the central theme, and for the first time in an introduction to pidgins and creoles, the Atlantic creoles receive the attention they deserve. Pidgins are not treated as necessarily an intermediate step on the way to creoles, but as linguistic entities in their own right with their own characteristics. In addition to pidgins, mixed languages are treated in a separate chapter.
Research on pidgin and creole languages during the past decade has yielded an abundance of uncovered material and new insights. This introduction, written jointly by the creolists of the University of Amsterdam, could not have been written without recourse to this new material.

A perfect stepbrother love story

Finally, a stepbrother book that turns out the way I wanted!
Derek has it bad for his stepsister, Charlotte. He knows she's the only one for him but she hates him. He never thinks she feels the same way.
How is he going to get to her?
When another guy makes a move on Charlotte, Derek's caveman comes roaring out. He can only hope she lets him in.
I loved this book so much. The ending is perfect. A must read

Two high school seniors trying to figure out where they stand with each other.

Derek and Charlotte have been step-siblings for 3 years and both are attracted to the other. Derek is now obsessed with Charlotte and wants her as his no matter the consequences. Charlotte is a good girl and is sick of Derek and his bad reputation and ways. Derek finally takes matter into his own hands and sets about making Charlotte realize that she is the one for him, that there are no others. Charlotte, with the help of her mother, gets over her apprehension and stands next to Derek. It was a short read and did have a good ending.

Quick and sweet.

I admit I wasn't sure what to expect from this one, since everybody said how much of a player (aka. the title name) he was. But there was no OW drama at all. What he did mention of his past sex life didn't bother me, since his feelings for 'his woman' came across really strong and sincere, that made me forget all his previous ONSs'.

I liked seeing his many layers. From a complete jackass to a sweet and caring lover. Also, I could relate to h's situation and her fears of her parents disapproval. I was not shocked but definitely surprised of the parents reaction when they found out (specially after the way they found out, ahem).
The epilogue was really sweet, too.

A great short and steamy taboo read.

Safety gang: It's safe. There is no OW drama but there is one scene with OM when he flirts with h. Of course H gets super jealous and interferes. As for H's sexual past, he didn't apologize for it and to be honest, it didn't bother me at all. Nothing was descriptive. Also, no condoms were used and h is a virgin, while H is a renewed man-ho. He didn't sleep with anyone for a year, ever since he started to have sexual feelings for h.

Intellectual Property in Electronics and Software, a new book from Globe Law and Business is an extremely handy book for IP practitioners since it discusses the most useful and the hottest IP issues relevant in the field in all major jurisdictions. It covers both basic and advanced IP filing and enforcement in relation to electronics and software in all the major jurisdictions across the world. Therefore, it is a very useful handbook for IP practitioners in this global era.

The book starts with some global IP issues that are being intensively discussed in recent years such as open source software licensing and standard-essential-patents etc. Then it follows with introductions to the practices regarding patent, copyright, trademark and other major IP aspects in Europe, USA and Asia-Pacific.

It is the expertise of the authors really distinguishes this book from its peers. All the authors are all experienced IP practitioners in their own jurisdictions. As a result, the book discusses the most practical aspects of IP protection. The consulting editor Nicholas Fox from Simmons-Simmons has obviously made a great effort coordinating the writing of such a book.

As a patent litigator from China, I found the chapter for China is accurate and helpful and I became more familiar with IP protection and enforcement in other jurisdictions after reading. The book is particularly helpful where it highlights the important differences in practice in the different jurisdictions.
