Young Love at its Best

What can I say? The third volume of Love at Fourteen continues its amazing story of young romance. What makes this series so impressive is how easily readers will empathize with the characters. And by the third volume, the cast of characters has grown to a point where you'll have no trouble picking out both your favorite person and your favorite budding relationship.

After the events in the last volume, there's now tension between the boys and girls of class 2-B. Kanata and Kazuki who step in trying to mediate the situation actually get sucked into it themselves. This results in the couple getting into their first fight ever with delightful consequences (at least to us readers). While this arc isn't necessarily one of my favorites due to its reliance on classic romcom tropes of misunderstandings driving the conflict, the arc does contain some of the author's best drawings on the series yet. I'll try not to reveal too much, but let's just say the characters fantasize about their love interests in school play costumes and man oh man is it stunning.

While Yen Press's summary advertises Kanata and Kazuki's fight as the main story for this volume, thankfully there's plenty more story to read including Kanata's first experience with makeup and a meaty arc between Nagai and Hinohara-sensei where Nagai questions whether or not Hinohara cares about him. This was definitely my favorite part of the book and as you can probably guess, my favorite couple.

One last thing that must be said is Aoi Shiki wins this volume's contest of best character. Ironically, while I like her the least of the main cast, she is arguably the most interesting because of her porcupine-like personality and numerous flaws. She also has the biggest uphill challenge in her love life on two fronts, the first being that she's in love with a girl and the second being that she knows her crush loves someone else. You're going to see Aoi in this volume really struggle between being aggressive in her pursuit of love and doing what is right for her crush. When you see the results of her efforts, your heart is going to ache for her.

Yen Press has done a great job with the series. I can happily report that the translation is awesome, and quality of the book is just stellar. The volume contains a few gorgeous, glossy-colored pages and an afterwards from the author. While I can't wait for the next volume, there's definitely more than enough content here that will tide me over before September's release.

Always a delight

I love how realistic this series is. It’s mature, in the way that it handles first love, and the way they’re mature characters, while insecure. The way the characters look at each other, their feelings develop, is subtle and slow, but at a steady, realistic pace.

Kanata and Kazuki have a fight, without meaning to or understanding how it happened. They try keeping up their good faces in front of their classmates. And then they make up, and it’s shy and sweet. They go out together, try to do things to impress each other. Kanata tries lip gloss, and wants Kazuki to notice.

Then there’s Nagai, who tends to show anger when he gets attention. I know some people will be uncomfortable with his developing relationship with their teacher, but I’m not. Maybe I should be, given I’m not sure how far apart in age they all are. But I kind of like how she teases him, pushes him. And how, in return, he’s starting to get to her.

And Shiki. I cannot express how pleased I am this series has straight couples (potential ones), and a gay character. I love it! She’s in love with Kanata, and I enjoy the way she thinks in third-person. She gets little chapters of thoughts, showing her feelings and growing friendship with Kanata, as well as her jealousy of Kazuki. I’m so impressed with this.

Then we got peaks of new characters at the end of the volume. I don’t know if we’ll see more of them, but I love the glimpses we get of other characters. Just little thoughts from main and side characters in snipets, the subtly showing worlds of thought and growth and work.

I love this series already. I’m wildly impressed with the development and thought and complexity. I can’t wait for the next one, every time.

Adorable couple

I love the innocence these two share when they are together and apart. It reminds me of how much we go through as adolescents when we start to recognize ourselves and those around us. Not only are these two dealing with this, but they have to deal with the feelings of blooming love as well. Seeing them move from one step at a time is just too sweet for words.

About the Author
Dr. Jane Huffman, Ph.D. is the director of the Northeast Wildlife DNA Laboratory at East Stroudsburg University, where her work focuses on the application of genetic methods to wildlife law enforcement and conservation management. She runs wildlife DNA forensic training courses for conservation officers from New Jersey and Pennsylvania. She, along with her students, has undertaken a wide range of applied research projects including the development of DNA profiling systems for game species in PA and NJ and microscopic hair characterization. The laboratory provides species identification tests for illegally sold wild meat. She provides forensic analysis and expert witness testimony in PA wildlife crime prosecutions.
Dr. Huffman is also the graduate student coordinator for the Department of Biological Sciences at East Stroudsburg University.

Dr. John R. Wallace, Ph.D., D-ABFE, F-AAFS, is one of 15 board-certified forensic entomologists and a diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Entomology. Dr. Wallace is a Professor of Biology and focuses on teaching courses in Entomology, Aquatic Biology, Aquatic Entomology, Forensic Entomology, Forensic Science, and Ecology and Evolution. His research interests cover topics such as mosquito and disease ecology as well as mosquito and blackfly surveillance, and the role of aquatic organisms such as insects, algae and crayfish on decomposition within forensic science.
As a forensic entomologist, Dr. Wallace has participated in criminal investigations all over the country since 1995. He has taught forensic entomology courses at the University level and workshops at various universities to law enforcement throughout the United States, published more than 45 articles or book chapters in National/International journals. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Science and an active member since 2002. Dr. Wallace is a co-founder and past President of the North American Forensic Entomology Association (NAFEA) in 2005 as well as the editor-elect for the NAFEA newsletter.

Insightful Book

Great Book! I was interested in researching some of the oils found in the Bible particularly the Holy Anointing Oil found in Exodus 30. The fact that the author is both a retired minister and former science professor has given him a unique perspective regarding this topic. Not only are the properties/uses of the various oils discussed in this book but also the applicable Scriptural references thus providing a very interesting and comprehensive overview of the oils found in the Bible. Many of the questions that I had been wondering about were answered in this book. Truly a fascinating study!

What an amazing resource

As a member of Young Living Essential Oils I am trilled to get this book to give me deeper insight into these amazing oils. I am reading the book from front to back and then I will start and Terra's it again and refer back to it on a regular basis. I hope to run a program at my church. Thank-you for such a wonderful resource

This book is very informative and will change how you think about Oils.

I bought this book as a recommendation because I just starting using essential oils. My friend said if your going to use them then you really need to read this book. I sat down and read this book and let me say this book was amazing. The author shows you all the different places and which oils are mentioned in the bible. The author gives different examples of how oils work and what they were/are used for. He gives biblical reference for where each oil is found in the bible. If you are just starting out on essential oils then I highly recommend reading this book.

This text is a primer for the economic analysis of medical markets and the production of health. It traces the economic rationale and development of the medical care organization. The first thirteen chapters use a "flow of funds" approach to describe the incentives and organizational structure of the health care system. Transactions between patients and physicians (and other) are examined to see how profits are made, costs covered, contracts written (or implied), and regulations formed. The continuing evolution of the system in the U.S. is the subject of two chapters on managed care. The last seven chapters take a wider macroeconomic perspective in order to explore the dynamics of change within the health care system, and to explicitly consider determinants of national health spending and the role of governments in public and private health.

The perfect introduction to health care economics.

I wrote a paper on managed care competition for an economics course. This book proved invaluable. Without any previous knowledge of health economics, I was able to read, learn, and understand a fairly complex subject in a short amount of time using this book. The text covers everything but remains at an undergrad level. The arguments and examples are simple, clear, interesting, and easy to remember. I definitely found this to be the best introduction and overview to health economics, after having read six or seven books on the subject.

Solid, even-handed treatment of a touchy subject

I am currently reading this book for an online course I am taking, and I am very impressed. It is well-reasoned, seeks to look at all perspectives objectively and avoids the trap of taking sides in the current healthcare debate. While the subject matter is by no means easy, the book is nonetheless highly accessible and engaging. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anybody wishing to gain a solid understanding of our healthcare system in the United States.

Dr Wilson has drawn on 15 years of research and 10 years of teaching experience in writing an account of what is now a well established understanding of the processes involved in environments of magma generation. She provides full discussions of the major-element, trace-element, and radiogenic isotope characteristics of magmas generated in different tectonic settings and she deals with the information derived from such data concerning magma source regions and their ascent trough the Earth's lithosphere. Additionally each chapter contains a summary of geophysical data relating to crustal and mantle structure and the location of magma reservoirs.
The modular format of the book will facilitate its use by all students, researchers and professionals with an interest in igneous petrology. A basic knowledge of geochemistry, mineralogy, phase diagrams, regional geology and global tectonics is assumed, but such advanced topics as trace element and isotope geochemistry can be omitted initially if the reader's background is inappropriate. The text is profusely illustrated and the bibliography contains over 1000 carefully selected references.

Marge Wilson graduated in geology at the University of Oxford. She then spent a year at the University of California, Berkeley, and subsequently studied the petrogenesis of nepheline syenites from the Gardar province of Greenland, leading to a PhD from the University of Leeds. Her research has focused on island-arc, oceanic-island and intra-continental plate tectonic settings.

Great book!

I took Marge's class at Leeds and had to use her book a couple times there, but it was only recently that I read most of it all the way through. It is helping so much in my thesis work and research; I strongly recommend the book for anyone doing any sort of igneous geochem!

Dr Zhivago a disaster-movie ?!?

well, well there are not to many filmbooks about disastermovies. They certainly had there best time in the seventies with films like "Airport", "Earthquake" oder "Towering Inferno" but also the following decades brought us films like "Volcano" or "Twister". The books describes the genre starting in the 1910's, with detailed analyses of the 70's films. I miss a filmographie with detailed informations - instead you'll find a list of disastermovies including "Batman", "Ben Hur" or even "Dr. Zhivago"... not very helpfull.... How different is this edition?

Has anyone compared the 2006 with the 2001 edition? I am wondering how substantive the changes are, especially since it costs $41 for the second edition, while the first edition is available for as low as $5. Obviously if a major re-write has resulted in significant changes throughout the text, then purchasing the newer edition is an important consideration. (According to the information he's added/altered material to reflect new natural disasters and in the wake of 9/11). But if the changes are minor, I'd like to know before I pay eight times as much for a version of this book. I'm using the text for research purposes and no libraries near me have it, nor is it available as an e-book.
