A MUST HAVE book on the subject of SS uniforms

If you've been looking for a book that offers BOTH wartime photographs AND multi angle/ close up studies of uniforms from actual collections, this book (and the two other volumes from that trilogy) is EXACTLY what you need. More than just a splendid coffee table book, it is an outstanding source of information about the history/construction and regulation for each and every variety of uniform issued to the various branches of the SS ( both BEFORE and DURING WW2) and it is worth every single penny I invested in it. As a militaria dealer, I could simply not afford not to add it to my collection. If you are interested by that subject and don't have those 3 books, then you are missing an essential resource. If on the other hand you want to know the subject in depth and do not plan to buy each and every book on the market, you have to get THAT serie. My only regret is that Mr. Michael D. Beaver is no longer among us to share his amazing knowledge of German Militaria.

The best research on SS uniform for today

A good structurized research that gives you a full view on this subject.
Only pants and jackets examined, no caps (as a part of uniform). The volume might be 1,5 times thinner: some pages only half filled with information... But rarity of the items and quality of thier analisys allow to consider this book the best research on SS uniform for today.

Difficult to put down

Marc Almond gives us a personally responsible and earnest look back at his childhood, his outrageous years in art school, his rise and descent with Soft Cell and his solo career - all in a sort of intimate, conversational way. When you try to put it down you find yourself thinking, "Okay, Marc just one more story..."
This is a firsthand account of the most fascinating era in rock history. The 80s were a time when anything was possible, and every imaginable personal vice was being dragged from every closet to the public eye. Marc was there, before Boy George and before Madonna, blazing a trail and providing an outlet for disaffected and rebelious youth. The drugs, the parties, the sex, the kitsch, the drama....it's all very entertaining.

Underrated Vocalist

Well, got the book in the mail. I've always loved Marc Almond, ever since I was 12 years old, hearing "Tainted Love" on the radio. I've kept up with most of his solo projects. "Stars We Are" is one of my all time favorite albums. "Mother Fist" and "Stories of Johnny" are also quite good.

So far from what I've read, it's gives some insight about who Marc Almond really is. He's a gentleman though, so in some of tales, he leaves out names.

It's tone is down to earth, and matter of fact. Most of all, it makes one realize how ahead of his time Mr. Almond was. For example, having the drug Ecstasy as a main influence in creating music ('Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret' album), Electro-clash pop, S&M/fetish imagery (still being used - look as some of Lady Gaga's latex outfits!), risque videos (original promotional video for Sex Dwarf, directed by Tim Pope), homoerotic imagery in music (aka his duet with Bronski Beat, and his recent work with Michael Cashmore), mixing cabaret sensibilities/style into his music (which I LOVE), collecting tattoos as art (WAY before it became 'trendy')...the list goes on.

Most of all, I respect the fact that Almond could have one foot in the mainstream, and one foot in the alternative/subcultural/underground. That he could go into either territory, depending on the project he's working on. Way after my teens, I've stopped listening to most 80s bands like The Cure, but with Almond, he always manages to evolve. It's always a pleasant surprise to pick up a Current 93 CD, and find out Marc Almond had contributed. Likewise, when I was getting into Psychic TV back when I was 18-19...picked up the first PTV album, and there was Almond. I dare you to find someone else who can accomplish feats such as this.

There was a moment when he was describing teen fans of Soft Cell during their prime - like when a crazy fan had named all her puppies after songs from Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret. Reading that passage, I was like "oh hell no." So yeah, we get to hear about psycho fans from a performer's perceptive.

My only gripe with Almond's autobiography is that he didn't really go too much about Cindy Ecstasy. I suppose the most important part was noted, when she introduced E to the band. However, to me she's such a mysterious character who caught my interest because she sang backup for both Soft Cell and Marc and The Mambas. (BTW, I LOVE LOVE LOVE both Marc and the Mambas albums!Had the 'Untitled' release on vinyl way back when.) He doesn't go all that much about his initiation into the Church of Satan, thanks to Boyd Rice. Then again, I've jumped around the book and hadn't read it fully. Plus when someone is initiated into a somewhat 'secret' order, you are sworn to keep oaths. So Almond was probably only allowed to reveal so much.

There is only one Marc Almond. A one of kind performer, entertainer, and very talented singer-songwriter. Too bad the condition of the book doesn't live up to the Almond legend.

Excellent book, it shows pretty well how it felt to be a gay teenager in the early 80's,right in the middle of the new romantic movement.If you admire Marc Almond as I do, read it and you'll understand him better.

Short novel is full of background, lots of technical data...

Let's start with I love just about everything David Weber has written. All the Harrington books are on my re-read list (and very few books make that list). That said this is a very specialized book and probably the drawings and diagrams are best viewed on something larger than a Kindle Paperwhite.

Be warned! This is NOT the first book in the Honorverse that should be read! It's got a lot of background that only really makes sense if you are already familiar with Honor Harrington and what's happened to Manticore since it's founding! And I love the article "Jayne's Intelligence Review." For those who aren't familiar with Jayne's it's the bible of fighting ships published every year since 1898 (and other things military). And this quote from a future Jayne's is... delicious!

This book needs a larger color format because it has many, many illustrations and technical drawings. On my Paperwhite they leave a bit to be desired but they're viewable. Like all Baen books this one is not restricted in any way and the color illustrations are glorious using the Kindle reader on my Mac... well worth browsing through!!!

The short novel is, like most Honorverse writings, very, very interesting and fills in a lot of background! But, be warned, Honor herself doesn't appear, this is mostly about King Roger, Queen Elizabeth's father, his death and how Elizabeth came to hate the Peeps so very, very much! There's a LOT of background about weapons, tactics and other technical stuff in the first 36% of this book.

But the rest of it is a feast of background and facts about The Star Empire of Manticore and The Protectorate of Grayson. Everything from how the systems were discovered and settled to their astrography and how their militaries are set up right down to the uniforms and rank insignia in all their branches. Ever wondered what a skin suit looks like??? Again, I'd recommend that if you're reading this on electronic media that the novel and all the technical data is great on a Paperwhite (although for some reason I couldn't change the font from a sans serif to a serif one -- which I find much easier to read) but the drawings, rank insignia, uniforms, etc. are much better on a larger COLOR screen! As is the cover!

All in all I found the short novel not the most engaging of Weber's writings but fascinating -- and it answered some questions.

If you've read all the Honorverse books I think you'll find this one very interesting... and the title, The Honorverse COMPANION very true!!!

An Honorverse Fix

For an Honorverse junkie like me this is nothing but great. I enjoyed the novella, the background history, personnel biographies, and fleet information immensely. The details enrich the Honorverse even more, and it provides a sort of reference book I can go back to when reading one of the novels. My only complaint is that the color plates had no Marine uniforms. Come on Mr. Weber, you know we Marines always have the best dress uniforms!

Buy a Physical Copy

Excellent book with everything a fan of the Honor Harrington series loves. Unfortunately the digital edition has trouble with the technical drawings, they are not high enough resolution so when you try to zoom in they just turn to mush. On many of the drawings you cannot even read the ship class even when zoomed out to normal view and zooming in just further obliterates any writing or notes in the drawings.

80% of the book is written and the content itself is very good.
