Chapter One -- The Dating Masquerade

Imagine sneaking into a glitzy costume ball where single men and women primp and prance in the hopes of finding Mr. or Ms. Right. Concealing their real personalities behind psychological "masks," the partygoers position themselves to make the best impression possible. Who knows? The next person they meet could be their long-awaited soul mate, their future husband or wife.

As the band heats up, so do the masqueraders. Ricocheting off each other like billiard balls, they jump from one masked stranger to another in search of true romance. Finally it happens: love at first disguise. A masked man and a masked woman fall in love with the image each is presenting. Perfection, bliss, happiness.

But then the inevitable happens: The ball ends, the masks come off. Now the masqueraders discover what their mate's personality is really like and their hearts harden: "How could I have been so blind? We have nothing in common!" they wail as they find themselves trapped again, miserable victims of the Dating Masquerade.

What a find!!! By reading this book and finding out who you really are and then
applying the doctors knowledge on your best match, well that is one thousand times
better than joining any dating program!!

This book falls flat

Dr. Avila proposes a theory for how people will be romantically compatible based on their Myers-Briggs type indicator. He has done a nice job describing the behavioral characteristics of each type. However, I disagree with his hypothesis on appropriate matches. I was surprised that Dr. Avila did not incorporate other research into his book.
For each type, he believes that the exact same type would be appropriate - or the exact opposite type. Other research suggests that people need to share at least 2 preferences to be compatible. Moreover, that the one dichotomy that people often match up on is the S and N. His theories are also in direct contradiction to Kiersey's Temperament - which states that Idealists and Artisans are fundamentally at odds, as are Rationals and Guardians. Avila recommends these matches.
I also found his recommendations for venues to meet partners to be weak. Unless one is in their mid-20s, I can't imagine going to a law library to meet an INTJ.
I don't think that this book was worth the money.

Best Investment I Ever Made!

Alexander Avila's LoveTypes is the single best book I've EVER read in my quests for self-understanding and for meeting the right mate. Charmingly written and drop-dead accurate, it's an immensely practical, easy-to-use system that saved me from marrying the wrong man. What a revelation! Suddently I see where I went wrong, over & over, in my 50 years. Using the myriad insights gleaned from LoveTypes, I can now accurately identify my "best bets" for both friends and romantic partners--in advance--instead of getting carried away by wishful-thinking or trying to fit round pegs into square holes. Dr. Avila's compassionate attitudes also reassured me that as a relatively rare personality [Idealistic Philosopher--INFP], it's NOT my imagination: there aren't alot of us out there! I also read Just Your Type, also excellent, but find that LoveTypes is more condensed, with a terrific format. Instead of using the rather confusing Myers-Briggs 4-letters (ESTJ, ISFP, etc,), Avila identifies the 16 personality types with delightful, easier to use descriptions, such as "The General" [ENTJ]. I used some invaluable practical tips on locating compatible people, with amazing results. As a bonus, reading LoveTypes feels like a big hug!

I used this book for my course contact mechanics. My instructor and I loved this book a lot. Very organized presentation of the topics. Very much recommended for anyone doing research in contact mechanics.

great reference

if you want to learn about hertz contact. this is THE book.
i found it really interesting.
organization was sort of weird though, when trying to compare the different cases it can be confusing. if you are working on a problem and looking for an appropriate formula, you have to dig around to make sure all the assumptions were right compared to another very similar formula. but, sort of the nature of the topic.
i cant think of a better book on this subject.

A Highly Recommended Title, as Entry Level Textbook

Excellent review of Hertzian and Non-Hertzian Contact problems. I highly recommend this book for those who are having their first contact with the subject. Grad students will find it useful and clear, but I'm not sure that undergrads will have an easy time handling the book, or the subject, for that matter.

This earnest roundup of anecdotes, interviews, statistics and remarks about hair and self-image among women in postwar America is engaging enough, but there's not much news here. Apart from a short historical survey at the beginning that includes a few suggestive facts, the only really informative part of this book is the chapter called "At the Salon" where we learn a good deal about the profession of hairdressing: who does it, what its economics are, how its distinctive caste system works. To be fair, information is not really Arizona State University sociologist Weitz's aim. Her main goal is to authorize a common feminine obsession with hair (her own included, of course) as a subject of serious discussion. It is also, worthily enough, to make the discussion more inclusive than other books like this often are. Weitz interviews many minority women, children, lesbians and older women, but her analysis of this rich material suffers from insufficient depth of cultural perspective. Weitz avers that hair is a uniquely powerful medium of self-presentation, but makes no attempt to distinguish between hair and dress, say, or between head and facial or body hair. Observing that the typical black hair salon functions not as a feminine preserve but as a community meeting place, she finds little large-scale significance in its public and private constructions of the activity of coiffing. Similarly, she alludes to different meanings attached to long hair, short hair or hairlessness mostly in terms of different individual experiences. The overall effect is diverting, well-intentioned light reading (including 16 pages of b&w photos) that doesn't quite fulfill the subtitle's promise.

Nice and thought-provoking overview, though I was hoping to see her thoughts on some major cultural identities not covered here.

I read an excerpt of this book four years ago and really liked how Weitz was able to capture so well the multifaceted meanings behind (female) hair. This book is a nice overview, full of anecdotes, that discuss the implications of natural hair, baldness/shaving your head, short hair and "butch" appearances, discourse on beauty salons, greying hair, dyeing hair, etc. Overall, I liked the book, but I wished that Weitz could have covered more ethnicities and cultures than she did here (the primary identities covered were white, African-American, Latino, and I believe some Jewish).

Dr. Weitz is an amazing author and researcher. This book helps to fill in a large gap that has been missing from research on the culture of women in America. In fact, everything that she writes is well-researched, deeply analyzed, and highly sigificant. I have had the great pleasure of being in one of her classes, and it was quite possibly the most challenging, and entertaining class of my undergraduate career. Thanks, Dr. Weitz! (And I'm still working on a definition for resistance!)

Cultural history of women's hair

A fascinating look at women and their relationship with their hair. Weitz conducted many interviews and personal research to provide the nine interesting and thought-provoking chapters. She begins with a short history of women's hair, touching briefly on some ancient, medieval and early modern sources and pictures. Most of the book focuses on modern women and the advances within the past one hundred years such as chemical treatments for straightening and relaxing the hair, as well as permanent waves and dyeing treatments. She devotes special portions of the book to African hair, and other ethnic/cultural hairstyles, and how hair makes up the identity of many women. Some particularly interesting styles she mentioned were the Mexican-American "chola" style, dreadlocks, and lesbian hair styles.
Why do women dye their hair? How are women affected when they lose their hair (whether they have alopecia, chemotherapy, or a voluntary buzzcut?) What are women's relationships like with their stylist? You will find out some very interesting answers to these questions when you read the book!

Like "Improvising on the Blues Piano" by the same fabulous editor, "Exploring Latin Piano" is a very profound study on Latinamerican Pianoplaying !!! At the same time, you can enjoy excellent pianopieces while learning !! It is real fun to slowly understand more and more about these styles to play the piano even though at times the pieces are difficult to play !! As the pieces are extremely rewarding, I didn't regret for a second to exercise real hard some times for this book !!

This is a super fun book

Ever since I got this book and other 2 books on Jazz and Blues by the same author, I've been busy, and I'm having a super fun time learning. this covers so many different styles of Afro/cuban music and it's filled with facts about each style (has even a brief history). It is well organized and thorough. Majority of the pages contain new pieces of music with some sections that encourages you to improvise with suggestions on the type of scales to use. I love playing along with the CD which has a very live feel to it since it includes bass and drums. The Cd is even fun listening on it's own so I sometimes play this in the morning to wake myself up, and to feel happy. Definitely recommend this to anyone interested in exploring this genre on the piano

About the Author

Carolin Duttlinger is University Lecturer in German at Oxford University, and Fellow and Tutor of Wadham College. She studied in Freiburg, Germany, and Cambridge, where she completed her doctorate in 2003. Her primary research interests lie in the field of twentieth-century German literature and thought, with particular reference to the relationship between literature and visual culture. She has published on writers such as Benjamin, Freud, Adorno, Sebald, and Thomas Kling and is the editor of a volume on Performance and Performativity in German Cultural Studies (2004). Her current project explores concepts of attentiveness in twentieth-century literature, science, and culture.

Rather expensive for a paperless, Kindle edition

I am a huge fan of Kindle, I read on my iPad (Kindle is iPad compatible). No trees involved, no need for a lamp so you don't disturb anyone at night, books get stored into the machine, you can go everywhere with your preferred library in your bag, if you're here you know what I mean.

But in this book's particular case, asking $77.90 for a paperless, coverless edition is outrageous, one would say "kafkaesque" .
