One of the classics of computer science.

More than 30 years after it was written, Searching and Sorting is still the definitive treatise on minimal-step sorting, tree-structures, and everything else Knuth took up.

I'm still reading a first edition copy, and I suppose other people - practical programmers, for instance - would prefer the updated and revised editions. But that's like buying a modern calculus text, rather than reading Newton in the original Latin.

This isn't a "Dummies Guide to....". It doesn't include helpful Windows shortcuts. It wasn't co-sponsored by Microsoft.

But it was written by a genius, struggling with hard problems, and writing with clarity and grace.

This is the best volume of a great series.

This is the book that separates amateurs from the professionals. One should do their homework and sorting and searching before trying to execute any programs in any kind of language.

Although the book itself is so dated there is not a better definitive description of what is required for sorting and searching which is the main core in the power of computers. Even with today’s cognitive computing thrust the cognitive programs have to still sort and search.

I periodically get this book off the shelf and cruise it to find out what it is that I forgot were to brush up on new techniques for new projects.

This book is well worth the purchase price before contemplating any new projects. After which it makes a great reference book.

A classic book if you want to learn about computer programming. The level is way above the basics, since it is more oriented at people that want to learn the theory behind sorting; so if you are a beginner or advanced user that wants to use sorting algorithms, this may be a bit over your head. The code examples are few and generic; plenty of complex math, but really thorough.

I am no fan of such books, but it has been great to read it to learn the theory behind; if you can take the style of the book. I liked more the first volume of the series, but this is good too.

Gregg Stoner spent two enlistments in the Marines during the Vietnam War and lived fives years in a boot camp environment. His first assignment was as a drill instructor, replacing his own drill instructor. He is currently the secretary of the Crow Crawford Chapter of the Drill Instructors Association.

The Best Marine Corps Boot Camp Book Currently Available

I stood on the yellow footprints in June of 1975 serving in the Marine Corps from 1975-1979. Over the years I have read every boot camp book I could find. This one is, by a wide margin, the best of them all. Where I have a problem with Mr. Stoner being so vocally anti war yet joining the Marine Corps (huh???) he did manage to write a great book. I also have a problem in that Mr. Stoner never served overseas (we were at war in Vietnam at the time) so I suspect that he may have had some credibility issues on the grinder as most of his fellow DI's would have been decorated war veterans who possessed a wealth of information that they could pass on to their recruits. Mr. Stoner was a war avoiding clerk typist.

Most Marine Corps boot camp books focus on the recruit experience. A few focus on the experience as viewed by the DI. This book is unique in that it looks at boot camp from both perspectives. Mr. Stoner starts out talking about his own experience as a recruit then later becomes a DI himself. The most interesting part of the book, to me, was learning about the DI school curriculum and how DI's viewed things. Every recruit, at the time, thinks that what's happening to them is unique, but boot camp is evidently heavily choreographed and follows a predictable formula. Most mass visits to the "pit" happen at the same time to each platoon when they hit certain trigger points in their training. It's been that way almost forever evidently.

I can't recommend this book highly enough.

The Yellow Footsteps to hell and Back

This would be a good book for anyone who wants to know what Marine Corps Boot camp is all about. I was a Marine Drill Instructor myself and know first hand.

When I heard about this book on Leatherneck.com, I thought that the idea of a book written from the viewpoint of the recruit and of the DI being the same person would be a great read. I was right. I went through MCRD San Diego in 1977, so visualizing what Gregg was putting forth, and what I went through, was like being there again. I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of, or is definitely going to join the corps. I'm sure it's different now than it was in my time, much less Gregg's, but it would still provide the basics of what a modern day boot would experience. One thing that impressed me of Mr. Stoner's story is the fact that even though he did not agree with the Vietnam war, he still joined up and served his time. Not only that, but he did a damn good job of it. I salute you, Mr. Stoner, and thank you for putting your experiences in writing for all of us to read.

William Turin is currently a Consultant at AT&T Labs Research. As a Member of Technical Staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories and later a Technology Consultant at AT&T Labs Research for 21 years, he developed methods for qualifying the performance of communication systems. Castle Dangerous-- more like Castle Chivalrous! More talking than fighting….

Douglas Castle, also known as Castle Dangerous, is the setting for Sir Walter Scott’s last book published during his lifetime. It tells the tale of a wandering English minstrel and his ‘son’, who are not exactly who they say they are. What is their connection to Sir John de Walton, the Governor sent to protect the castle from the hands of the Scottish outlaws? Sir Aymer de Valence, the young second in command, is he too trusting or is his instincts spot on?

It may help to know a bit of history before reading, James Douglas fought alongside Robert the Bruce and William Wallace in the 14th C. AS a child his family’s castle was taken away by the English King, his father died in prison and he was exiled in France. Upon his return to Scotland, James vowed to get his family’s home back. He was called James the Good by those in Scotland and The Black Douglas by the English. There are some historical truths in the book and there are also a couple inaccuracies but they can be overlooked as it is meant to be fiction, not non-fiction. That being said, the tale unfolds slowly; not an action-packed swash buckling tale as one would expect from the title. My copy was nothing fancy, no illustration but merely plain condensed text. While I often had to force myself to stay with it, I am glad I did.

MAGNIFICENT! BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED_WHAT APPEAL!

What memories of childhood it brings back,andhapppy hours reading so many of the Classics Illustrated series. Beautifully illustrated to get a young person's attention, captions excellent and easy to read,but also offering a larger vocabulary than normally offered students on comparable levels in schools--great story, so glad to replace it--my third copy in my lifetime!
