Awesome book for every household

Love, love, love this book! Oh how I wish I had found this earlier. I figured that like most books of this sort, there would be a hint of useful information, but nothing of too much substance. Not true!! There is a ton of highly informative information with DETAILS! I find that many info books for kids give you various items to try but nothing in the way of dosages or that sort of thing. This book is full of information on EXACTLY what to try. I really cannot say enough good about it.

Very helpful book for home remedies! A Must Read Book For Parents! For me, I have found this book very helpful and I will share with you the reasons:

1) There are 100 remedies for a child’s symptoms and illnesses in this book and each remedy is so USEFUL and HELPFUL In my opinion this is a must have book for parents. In addition for me personally (an adult), I found this book has helped me in many areas!

2) This SUPERB book is written by a very knowledgeable and caring person. And I found his method of writing in a warm and comfortable conversation manner. This helped me to understand the ways to change my way of thinking for the better.

3) What I found the most helpful about this book: INDEX. Now I can go to the index and look up the subject of my choice and right to it! This is so handy.

4) This book is the most helpful remedy book that I read. May I also suggest that you be sure to read the part in the book on Micronutrients and Minerals. There you will find a chart of the least amount a child needs per day and the maximum amount as you want to be sure they get the correct amount of vitamins and minerals.
Also be sure to read #79 regarding how to treat Influenza, symptoms, etc. With the flu season upon us, this is a MUST READ and first!

Misleading label

This is only Vol 1 and its appendices. And no, you can't tell that from the sample. Amazon needs to apply some discipline to the descriptions and metadata on re-publications of old multivolume public domain works. We shouldn't have to buy a pig-in-a-poke. It happens much too frequently.

THE FOURTH VOLUME OF HUME'S FAMED HISTORY

The History of England is philosopher and writer David Hume's great work on England's history from the invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution of 1688, written while he was serving as librarian to what became the National Library of Scotland. It was published in six volumes in 1754, 1756, 1759, and 1761. This fourth volume covers the period of Queen Elizabeth from 1558 to 1602. The previous volume was The History of England, Volume III (History of England, The), and the next volume is The History of England: From the Invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution in 1688: Volume V.

He begins with the statement, "In a nation so divided as the English, it could scarcely be expected, that the death of one sovereign, and the accession of another, who was generally believed to have embraced opposite principles to those which prevailed, could be the object of universal satisfaction: Yet so much were men displeased with the present conduct of affairs... that the people, overlooking their theological disputes, expressed a general and unfeigned joy that the scepter had passed into the hands of Elizabeth... compassion towards her situation, and concern for her safety, had rendered her, to an uncommon degree, the favourite of the nation." (Pg. 3-4)

He asserts, "Of all the European churches, which shook off the yoke of papal authority, no one proceeded with so much reason and moderation as the church of England; an advantage... partly from the gradual and slow steps, by which the reformation was conducted in that kingdom. Rage and animosity against the catholic religion was as little indulged as could be supposed in such a revolution... The splendor of the Romish worship, though removed, had at least given place to order and decency... And the new religion, by mitigating the genius of the ancient superstition... had preserved itself in that happy medium, which wise men have always sought..." (Pg. 119-120)

He observes, "During these years, while Europe was almost every where in great commotion, England enjoyed a profound tranquility; owing chiefly to the prudence and vigour of the queen's administration, and to the wise precautions, which she employed in all her measures." (Pg. 176) He adds, "The queen had now brought affairs with Mary [I] to that situation... and had found a plausible reason for executing vengeance on a competitor... But she was restrained ... She foresaw the invidious colours, in which this example of uncommon jurisdiction would be represented by the numerous partizans of Mary, and... all foreign princes, perhaps with all posterity... Elizabeth, therefore, who was an excellent hypocrite, pretended the utmost reluctance to proceed with the execution of the sentence..." (Pg. 236)

Of Mary [I, "Queen of Scots"] he states, "a woman of great accomplishments both of body and mind, natural as well as acquired; but unfortunate in her life, and during one period, very unhappy in her conduct. The beauties of her person and graces of her air combined to make her the most amiable of women... she seemed to partake only so much of the male virtues as to render her estimable, without relinquishing those soft graces, which compose the proper ornament of her sex." (Pg. 251)

He summarizes about Elizabeth, "The unusual length of her administration, and the strong features of her character, were able to overcome all prejudices... Her vigour, her constancy, her magnanimity, her penetration, vigilance, address, are allowed to merit the highest praises, and appear not to have been surpassed by any person that ever filled a throne.... Her heroism was exempt from temerity, her frugality from avarice, her friendship from partiality, her active temper from turbulency and a vain ambition... but we are also apt to require some more softness of disposition, some greater leniency of temper, some of those amiable weaknesses by which her sex is distinguished... her qualities as a sovereign, though with some considerable exceptions, are the object of undisputed applause and approbation." (Pg. 351-353)

While Hume's scholarship has since been superseded, his lively writing style makes this a series well worth reading.

When civil dudgeon first grew high

This is a review of the Liberty Press edition, which is properly typeset and should be distinguished from the numerous print-on-demand versions currently (2011) advertised.

This is the fifth of six volumes of Hume's History of England, though it was the first published, as it is the first of the two volumes of the History of the Stuarts that was the first part to be completed. The first edition contained a remark summarising the theme as opposition to 'superstition and fanaticism', by which Hume meant Anglo-Catholicism and Puritanism. He was persuaded to remove this from later editions, but it summarises his 'plague on both their houses' approach to the conflict between King and Parliament of which the English Civil War and 'Glorious Revolution' are the best known parts. The Whig reply was John Millar's Historical View of the English Government.

The book also has chapters on the development of literature and trade and is almost Shakespearian in the variety of characters who pass before us on the stage of Hume's imagination. Some argue that Hume's sympathies are too secular to do justice to such a religious epoch, but one certainly learns a lot on the way from his even-handedness. For example, I admired the Quaker's greeting the King as 'Friend Charles'. One point to bear in mind is that volumes five and six are a single story, so even if you start here you are in for a long, though rewarding read. The concluding History Of England Vol 6 ends the series with a hymn of praise to Butler's Hudibras, a poem of classic 17th century Anglican sensibility.

The Liberty Press edition is part of a series of cheap, good quality American reprints of out of copyright classics from the 'Scottish Enlightenment'. I'd recommend that if you're interested in the time or place, or in David Hume himself, you take advantage of it.

Excellent Handbook!!!

I first became aware of Dr. Gastel's book when she was quoted in an e book on medical writing written by one of her former students who has done quite well in the profession. As a disabled physician interested in developing my writing skills I felt that this might just be the information source I needed. I couldn't have been more correct. Her writing style is easy to follow and understand and the topics chosen for this book fully encompass the various areas that even a seasoned writer might find useful. She has also included numerous helpful websites. There aren't a lot of books available on this subject but there doesn't need to be when one such as this has been written. Thanks Dr. Gastel!!

Packed with info, but just a bit dry

Gives you lots of relevant contact info that you could choose from depending on the type of article you plan to write. Good for beginners but I see it as useful for advanced writers as well. Makes excellent points on what goes into writing a riveting and relevant article. Overall, I recommend it.

Love this medical thriller

As a physician one would think that the last place I'd look for entertainment would be medically related literature. But I find myself drawn to it especially when the story is so plausible and the hospital and clinical characters are so true to life as was the case in this exciting and all-to-possible story. The book just whisked you away from the very start and was impossible to put down. There were some truly macabre and twisted methods that the authors came up with to agonizingly terminate at least one of the characters that only someone in the field could have come up with. But it was the premise of the story that made this one of the best medical mysteries I've read in years because this could really happen and it would be relatively easy given what I know of security in the various hospitals I've worked in to pull this off. Finally, the authors' style of inexorably building tension within a framework of making all the medical technology and jargon understandable to the lay reader just added to the pleasure of this diabolical plot. I highly recommend this book.

Medical Thriller about a couple who hold cancer patients hostage for treatment needed to keep them alive. Gina Mazzio, RN fights for her patients. After losing one of her favorite patients, she investigates to find the problem, despite the obstacles of her boyfriend, the hospital, the physician and the killer. Provides insight into the world of oncology and definitely not for the squeamish. Graphic depictions with some foul language. If you like edgy medical thrillers, you might like "Bone Dry."

Not worth the time, even if it's free!

Certainly a fast read for me, since I had to skim more than half of to get it over with. Very predictable plot with an even more predictable ending, and if you waste your time and money on this then who you thought did it at the beginning, well that's who did it. No surprises here. But lots and lots of extremely foul language which is hard to take. If a writer is good at their craft then I don't think they have to use so much foul language. There are better medical thrillers out there than this.

Practical insights on how and why customer-centric marketing can create or increase demand for the given offering

I cannot recall a prior time when customers had more control over the purchase/pass decision-making process than they do now. There are several reasons why. Here are three: they have more choices than ever before (including passing), they know more about products and services than ever before (especially via consumer reviews and social media), and so-called "customer loyalty" is earned and retained or lost one transaction at a time. The essence of marketing remains unchanged (i.e. create or increase demand for whatever is offered) but just about everything else has changed.

Although the term "youtility" is a tad cutesie for my literary palate, it does correctly stress two key concepts: customer-centrism, and, usefulness. According to Jay Baer, "Instead of marketing that's needed by companies, Youtility is marketing that's wanted by customers. Youtility is massively useful information, provided for free, that creates long-term trust and kinship between your company and your customers." As one sign of the times, Best Buy has done that by providing useful information that many people then use when making purchases online...from Amazon.

Baer examines three types of consumer awareness: Top-of-Mind ("an overripe banana tenuously clinging to relevancy"), Frame-of-Mind ("an apple, worthy of eating, but not enough to sustain you"), and Friend-of-Mine (Baer offers no metaphor so I will suggest a cook book). He identifies and discusses 20 companies that possess a Friend-of-Mine mindset and demonstrate Youtility in their customer relationships. Listed in alpha order, they include Angie's List, Big Popppa Smokers, Charmin (Sit or Squat), Clorox, Columbia Sportswear, Hilton Worldwide (@HiltonSuggests program), Holiday World, Life Technologies, McDonald's Canada, Phoenix Children's Hospital, Scott's Miracle-Gro Company, Syncapse, and Taxi Mike.

However different these organizations may be in most respects, all of them -- in my opinion -- seem committed to achieve most of these strategic objectives:

o Identify and understand (really understand) customer needs
o Embed those needs within marketing initiatives that respond to them
o Market (promote, better yet celebrate) marketing
o Embed a Youtility mindset at all levels and in all areas of the given enterprise
o Sustain Youtility as an on-going process, a way of organizational life, not as a special project
o Use quantitative analytics to "keep score" both internally and externally

Baer explains how to achieve these objectives, providing a blueprint for each in Part Three. As several of his exemplars (notably Big Popppa Smokers and Taxi Max) clearly indicate, Youtility can be created and then sustained by almost any organization, whatever its size and nature may be. Business leaders who read this book should pay special attention to how quite different companies have become Youtility-driven.

As I concluded my first reading of this book, I was again reminded of Fred Reichheld's research on the importance of trust ("glue") in all of an organization's relationships with stakeholders, especially those with its employees and companies. It was Reichheld who devised the "Ultimate Question," one that obtains customer data of ultimate importance: "On a zero-to-ten scale, how likely is it that you would recommend us (or this product/service/brand) to a family member, friend or colleague?" As Reichheld explains, the phrasing of that question is "a shorthand wording of a more basic question, which is, [begin italics] Have we treated you right, in a manner that is worthy of your loyalty? [end italics]' The results calculate what Reichheld identifies as the Net Promoter Score (NPS) and so shall I. But the question really wasn't [and isn't] the heart of things. After all, no company can expect to increase its growth or profitability merely by conducting surveys, however the question or questions might be phrased." A Youtility-driven company will have employees as well as customers giving it a high NPS. If you purchase the book from Amazon, it will cost you only $15.55 (hardbound edition) to learn just about everything Jay Baer has learned about how to create and then sustain a customer-centric, high-impact organization. Value Never Goes Out of Style

Two of my favorite business books of all time are Dale Carnegie's How To Win Friends and Influence People, and Al Ries and Jack Trout's Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind. A third may be joining them, which is Jay Baer's Youtility.

Youtility focuses on the customer, and the need for marketing to help customers. I love this because it begins building value for the customer right out of the gate.

In the end brands promise customers something, and that customer has to value that promise and resulting experience enough to buy it. Some call that a value proposition or a positioning statement, but in the end, customers need to receive something.

Dale Carnegie's book, while somewhat dated after 80 years, was the sales bible for many organizations. It brought a relentless focus on the customer, and serving them. And Positioning was about architecting brands to communicate that service promise in an attractive way.

What Youtility skillfully brings to the table is a modern view of these two core marketing tenets. Baer addresses the modern information and content marketing environments, and provides analysis of the tactics. Combined with his timeless approach of creating value by being helpful, brands can't go wrong.

Helpfulness is not the only way to build a brand, but is one of the very best methods. Any company that takes this approach will find itself on a path towards long-term relationships. There can never be too much value in a purchase.

Too much youtility, not enough utility

I really wish Jay Baer was less obsessed with coining a term and focused more on creating value for the reader. The word Youtility appears 179 times in this book, but it's nothing more than the author's way of referring to a concept that's not altogether new. There are definitely good concepts in this book and they're explained in a way that is easy to understand, but too many pages are wasted in examples that show the same principles being applied by many different companies. This would be a much better book if it was 50-60 pages shorter and followed the tone set by the foreword (which is interesting and information-dense).
