Andrew Jackson and His Indian Wars, by Robert Vincent Remini

The expulsion of Native Americans from the eastern half of the continent to the Indian Territory beyond the Mississippi River remains one of the most notorious events in US history, and the man most responsible and most widely blamed for their removal is Andrew Jackson. Robert Remini, hailed by the New York Times as "our foremost Jacksonian scholar," now provides a thought-provoking analysis of this single most controversial aspect of Jackson's long career. Masterfully capturing Jackson's flaws and limitations as well as his heroism, Remini contends that, despite the injustice and atrocities that accompanied the removal, Jackson in fact ensured the tribes' survival.

This is at once an exuberant work of American history and a sobering reminder of the violence and darkness at the heart of that history.

Amazon.com Review
Like many of his Scots-Irish contemporaries on the western frontier of the early United States, Andrew Jackson grew up despising and fearing his Indian neighbors. He proved to be a formidable enemy, campaigning against the Cherokee, Creeks, Chickasaws, and other peoples, some of them former allies against England in the Revolution and the War of 1812. In doing so, he established precedents that his compatriots would follow for the rest of the 19th century.

Robert Remini, the National Book Award-winning biographer of Jackson, here turns his attention to Jackson's relations with the Indian nations of the American South. Those relations, he writes, were tempered by the racism of the day, but, as both general and president, Jackson was also unusual in enforcing rights guaranteed to those nations by treaty, even in instances when he disagreed with the terms. Despite his sense of justice, Jackson kept to his conviction that "Indians had to be shunted to one side or removed to make the land safe for white people to cultivate and settle," and during his tenure as president he pursued a policy of forced removal through which the Indian nations were relocated to the so-called Indian territories west of the Mississippi River, which in turn would be overrun only a few years later.

Though critical of Jackson's policies and actions, Remini suggests that removal saved many of the eastern Indian nations from almost certain annihilation. That view, while capably argued, is controversial, and some scholars of American Indian history are sure to take issue with it. Still, this is a valuable addition to the historical literature, one of interest to general readers as well as Remini's fellow historians. --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly
"I want to assure the reader that it is not my intention to excuse or exonerate Andrew Jackson for the role he played in the removal of Native Americans west of the Mississippi River. My purpose is simply to explain what happened and why": so writes Remini, who won the National Book Award for his three-volume biography of the seventh president. This provocative book is sure to create controversy for scholars, the Native American community and lay historians, among others. Jackson was the president who "removed" the five "civilized" tribes from the South and forced them westward across the Mississippi River. Existing studies portray Jackson as a villain. Not so, says Remini, who examines Jackson's life to show that he was a product of his age, nothing more, nothing less. Indian tribes sided with the British during the Revolution, then repeatedly confronted the first generation of settlers who moved into the western frontier Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi. Jackson vaulted to national prominence when he bloodily crushed the British-allied Creek tribe in 1814 during the War of 1812. Then, with or without presidential approval, Southern District Commander Jackson invaded Spanish-held Florida; acting as an "Indian commissioner," he proceeded to lever indigenous people off their ancestral lands in exchange for territory farther west. The idea, Remini says, was first espoused by Thomas Jefferson and was supported by the vast majority of frontier Americans. Despite or, indeed, because of its grave, catastrophic results, Jackson's policy deserves to be judged in light of early 19th-century America, argues Remini. He further contends that Jackson's removal policy may have actually saved the tribes from being exterminated. Expert reviewers, pundits and descendants may feel otherwise. Maps not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
Many Americans today tend to lay the sole blame for the Indian removals of the 1830s on the shoulders of Andrew Jackson. Award-winning historian and Jackson biographer Remini argues that this is a very simplistic view that betrays a lack of understanding of the circumstances surrounding removal. In this book he explains what happened and why, showing that national security interests protecting the southern border from English and Spanish machinations dominated Jackson's thinking throughout his life and that he firmly believed that separating Native Americans and whites was the only way to ensure the survival of tribal cultures. It is a story of negotiations, bribery, tribal politics, and war told in all its complexity and based on a lifetime of research and study. This well-written volume is accessible to students and general readers as well as scholars and specialists, and it belongs in most libraries. Stephen H. Peters, Northern Michigan Univ. Sharp Knife
By Robin Friedman
Although Americans are prone to refer to Jackson as "Old Hickory" or, in his day, as "the Hero", the Indian tribes of his day gave him the nickname of "Sharp Knife". This nickname was based upon Jackson's unrelenting warfare against the Creek Indians, particularly at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in 1814. Professor Remini shows in his careful and thorough study of Jackson and the Indians that the sobriquet was indeed well deserved. The book is a thorough and careful exposition of the cruelties practiced on the Indians during the Jacksonian Era culminating in their removal from their homes and their relocation west of the Mississippi River during and subsequent to Jackson's Presidency.
Remini is a master of his materials. He has written a National Book Award winning biography of Jackson together with many other works on the Jacksonian Era of our history.
After a brief introductory chapter summarizing Jackson's early years, Remini plunges into the story of Jackson's Indian wars. Prior to his Presidency, Jackson conquered the Creeks, Cherokees, Chickasaws and Seminoles in fierce no-quarter fighting. Jackson was resolute in his wish to remove the Indians from the Southeastern United States.
In addition to his leadership on the battlefield, Jackson was a participant in many treaties with the Indians in which the ceded large portions of their ancestral domain in return for small tracts of land and small sums of money. Here too, Jackson was a domineering, seemingly irresistible figure intent on opening the Southeast to the onrush of white settlement, with little regard for the effect of his actions on the Indians.
As a national hero based upon his victory at the Battle of New Orleans and his conquests of the tribes, Jackson narrowly missed the Presidency in 1824 but was elected in 1828 and 1832. He was able to implement the policy of Indian removal he had conceived in his years as a general and a treaty negotiator. He secured legislation from Congress authorizing the removal of the "Five Civilized Tribes" -- the Cherokees, Chickasaws, Creeks, Choctaws, and Seminoles -- and implemented this policy at great cost and suffering to the Tribes. It is a story all too little known today.
Jackson was a man of determination, strength, and will. He was also, in Remini's account, an American patriot. Shocking as was his treatment of the Indians, Jackson was moved by considerations of American Nationalism. In particular, he wished to protect the coastal areas of the United States from intrigue and invasion by England and France. The European powers tended to use the Indians as a means to threaten the United States.
Although he is properly critical of Jackson's cruelty, arrogance, and deceit towards the tribes, and of the horrors they underwent during the removal, Remini argues that there was no good alternative to the removal policy. If the tribes had not been removed they would have been overwhelmed by onrushing white settlement and lost entirely their tribal identity, as was the case with many northeastern tribes. Paradoxically, Jackson proved right in that the removal policy saved the southeast tribes from extinction. Of course, none of this excuses the cruelty with which the process was implemented; and Remini is far from trying to excuse it.
I came to Remini's book after reading an earlier study of Jackson and the Indians: Michael Paul Rogin's book " Fathers and Children: Andrew Jackson and the Subjugation of the American Indian." I wasn't entirely happy with the Rogin because of its hypercritical tone and because of its psychologizing. Remini's book constitutes a more thorough, thoughtful, and balanced consideration of this sad period in our history. This is a good book for those who wish to try to understand Indian policy and its role in our country's development.

Biography at its best
By Candace Scott
This is a magnificent look at Andrew Jackson's war with the Native Americans. So many biographers bury their subject and forget that most readers what to know who their subject *was*, not merely what they *did.* Remini doesn't fall into this trap. He gives the reader a well-grounded and detailed look at Andrew Jackson as a man: his foibles, passions and prejudices, as well as his extreme ambition and vacillating brilliance.
Remini strikes a beautiful balance when examining Jackson's private life and military/political life. His examination of the Trail of Tears is absolutely riveting, and he weaves Jackson in and out of the narrative with rare poise and skill. The reader can actually picture Jackson in the midst of this conflict, feel his emotions and understand the decisions he made. When a biographer can paint such a vivid picture, the reader will always be rewarded.
This is an excellent book for the entire spectrum of people interested in Jackson. Whether you are a neophyte or an established Jacksonian historian, there is much to enjoy, as well as new material. The footnotes and bibliography are excellent resources and lead to additional sources for the reader. The minute I finished this, I bought the second volume, "Andrew Jackson: The Course of American Freedom, 1822-1832," also available here. This volume is truly an outstanding book

Disappointing, especially from such a renowned scholar
By Geoff Pietsch
Let me start with a disclaimer: Prof. Remini was both my instructor in a history course and my Master's seminar advisor when he was a visiting professor at Columbia in 1959-'60. He approved my Master's Essay; I received my M.A. that year.
While his book is, as one would expect from Prof. Remini, clearly written and well-documened, it has a fundamental flaw which leads to my low rating. Not only is Remini unpersuasive in justifying Jackson's relentless efforts to remove the Indians, but he is also internally inconsistent. He argues: "There was no way the American people would continue to allow the presence of the tribes..." yet immediately before this assertion Remini had acknowledged that removal had barely passed Congress. Why was Congress so divided? Because - according to Remini himself - the American people had pressured Congress to protect the Indians' rights.
Not only does Remini have nothing to say to shoot down his own evidence showing wide popular support for the Indians, but he also fails to even discuss why the President who was ready, even eager, to use military force to compel obedience from a rebellious South Carolina at the time of the tariff/nullification controversy would be cowed by supposed popular opposition to the Indians removal.
I've long felt that Jackson had a generally very impressive administration but that his brutality towards the Indians was his greatest flaw as President. (His support for slavery was very wrong, of course, but it was not an issue in which he played a decisive role - as he did regarding the Southeastern tribes.) I wanted to read Remini's book because I thought that he, as the pre-eminent Jacksonian scholar, might at least provide a reasoned explanation for Jackson's actions. As I've made clear, he completely failed to do so.

Finding our own inner strength, wisdom, and compassion in finding a mate with guidance from above
By outwest
What is the right partner and what do they mean in my life? Such a simple question, but faith can be overlooked in finding the right person. Most books about finding the right partner often limit themselves only to nondenominational advice. By virtue of this, they fail to incorporate elements of spirituality and spiritual guidance which can have a critical impact on finding and keeping a relationship. This book takes you along a path looking into how faith can direct our search and how that guidance translates into a deeper relationship.

This book should not be limited to just the people of faith, as its contents touch on so much more than that. Compassion. Inner strength. Wisdom. All things that anyone could use more of in finding a significant other. With the pressures of modernity and commercialism at every side dictating choices, looking back into ourselves to find our inner strengths and vulnerabilities, our character, and even our faith in finding a mate is a compelling reason to read this book. This insightful book may just strike a chord in you, as it did me.

It turned out to be very insightful and opened my eyes to a lot.
It also helped me to see that there is nothing wrong with respectfully walking away from a relationship when there is no compatibility.

Determinants of Democratization: Explaining Regime Change in the World, 1972-2006, by Jan Teorell

What are the determinants of democratization? Do the factors that move countries toward democracy also help them refrain from backsliding toward autocracy? This book attempts to answer these questions through a combination of a statistical analysis of social, economic, and international determinants of regime change in 165 countries around the world in 1972-2006, and case study work on nine episodes of democratization occurring in Argentina, Bolivia, Hungary, Nepal, Peru, the Philippines, South Africa, Turkey, and Uruguay. The findings suggest that democracy is promoted by long-term structural forces such as economic prosperity, but also by peaceful popular uprisings and the institutional setup of authoritarian regimes. In the short-run, however, elite actors may play a key role, particularly through the importance of intra-regime splits. Jan Teorell argues that these results have important repercussions both for current theories of democratization and for the international community's effort in developing policies for democracy promotion.

Review
"The most systematic and comprehensive analysis of democracy's Third Wave, integrating case studies and large-N cross-national comparisons. A major contribution to the field of democratization."
-John Gerring, Boston University

"Determinants of Democratization is one of the most empirically ambitious, sweeping, and important books that has been written on democratization. It is a must-read for all scholars who work on democratic and authoritarian regimes."
Scott Mainwaring, University of Notre Dame

"... there is no doubt that Teorell's book makes a major contribution to the already crowded field of democratization studies. The theoretical and empirical ground covered is breath-taking and in their combination with high methodological sophistication and various conceptual innovations, such as the intriguing operationalization of pathway cases and the distinction between upturns and downturn, are outstanding. His book should be considered a must-read for democratization and multi-method scholars alike."

Quantitative Hydrogeology: Groundwater Hydrology for Engineers, by Ghislain De Marsily

FROM THE PREFACE: This book attempts to combine two separate themes: a description of one of the links in the chain of the water cycle inside the earth's crust i.e., the subsurface flow; and the quantification of the various types of this flow, obtained by applying the principles of fluid mechanics in porous media. The first part is the more descriptive, and geological of the two. It deals with the concept of water resources, which then leads us on to other links in the cycle: rainfall, infiltration, evaporation. runoff, and surface water resources. The second part is necessary in order to quantify ground water resources. It points the way to other applications, such as solutions to civil engineering problems including drainage and compaction; and transport problems in porous media, including aquifer pollution by miscible fluids, multiphase flow of immiscible fluids, and heat transfer in porous media, i.e., geothermal problems. However, the qualitative and the quantitative aspects are not treated separately but combined and blended together, just as geology and hydrology are woven together in hydrogeology.

The right book for hydrogeologist
By Rocky Jiang
This book deals with the mechanism of groundwater hydrology, and presents how to build mathematical models based on the analysis. What is most attractive is that it gives arguments on many under-developed aspects of quantitative hydrogeilogy. The book is systemly and addresses problems to a reasonable details. I like this book and hope to buy one for an acceptable price.

The Volunteer : A Former IRA Man's True Story, by Shane Paul O'Doherty

Synopsis:
“This is the best account of the life of an IRA volunteer yet written.” The Irish Times

“No better explanation of why ordinary people turn to terrorism has ever been written. O’Doherty’s compelling story is a brilliant, firsthand account of how the boy next door became a bomber…. O’Doherty traces his early involvement with the IRA with disarming honesty and humour…. Most riveting, however, is the story of his disillusion with the romance of republicanism and his complete denunciation of violence. … The Volunteer is an excellent study of the civilian turned terrorist turned civilian.” The Catholic Herald

“O’Doherty gives a graphic account of the making of an IRA man. Perhaps the book’s greatest strength, and no doubt the feature that, as O’Doherty predicts, will irritate, is the emotional tone in which the story is told. He tells it how he saw and felt it at the time. When he is a stubborn, impetuous youth, he recounts as a stubborn, impetuous youth. When he is a blinkered perpetrator of callous violence, he recounts as a blinkered perpetrator of callous violence. When he becomes an older-but-wiser committed pacifist, the tone shifts yet again to reflect that incarnation.” The Independent (London)

About the Author:

Shane O’Doherty joined the IRA at 15 years of age and was later arrested. He was one of the first prisoners to work his way past the negativity of the philosophy of armed struggle, beginning to recommend publicly and privately an end to violence and a full engagement with the democratic process. From his prison cell, O’Doherty courageously wrote letters of apology to his victims. He was released after serving 14 years and read for a degree in English at Trinity College, Dublin.

Soul of an IRA man
By Joseph Kennedy
I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Irish history, especially the Troubles in the north of Ireland. Why do young men and women raised in a religious society by loving families turn to violence and the gun? Instead of dismissing the IRA as a terrorist organization of sociopaths, this book takes us on a personal, spiritual journey of a man who reflected on his experience of growing up with oppression, who felt stripped of his dignity. He embraces violence as the only possible response then later realizes the futility of violence in making real changes in oneself or society. This is a very worthwhile look at the journey that many who embrace violence for political reasons experience.

"Engineer" Volunteer..
By George McCullough
I can honestly tell you Shane O'Doherty, the Volunteer for the Irish Republican Army was one of the most effective explosives engineers ever for IRA. His exploits "with a human face and human emotion" is a fascinating read here. I won't explain further, read this book! IRA THE BOMBS & THE BULLETS by A. R. Oppenheimer sheds alot of detail on this young lad's trail of expertise in the designing, the making and the placing of IED's and often, ingenius and complex triggering mechanisms that changed constantly to outdo the British EOD squads.
Any student of national-identity conflict must read this book, THE VOLUNTEER. You will be surprised how conscience plays a role in a bomber's death and destruction resume.

Best Account of the Lifeo of an IRA Volunteer Yet Written
By Calamus
The racy, thrilling autobiography of former IRA volunteer, Shane Paul O'Doherty, from Derry, Northern Ireland who later became one of the first advocates for the peace process. O'Doherty joined the IRA at 15yrs of age, and became a prominent bomber for over 5 years. Arrested during a ceasefire between the IRA and the British government (a ceasefire he had supported within the IRA), O'Doherty was later convicted of a letter bomb campaign in London, along with some time bombs, O'Doherty refused to recognise the court and was sentenced to life plus twenty years. He refused to wear prison uniform and spent over 14 months naked in solitary confinement in Wormwood Scrubs prison. Wracked by questions of justice, human rights, violence and his innocent civilian victims, O'Doherty was one of the first prisoners to work his way past the negativity of the philosophy of armed struggle, beginning to recommend publicly and privately an end to violence and a full engagement with the democratic process. From his prison cell, O'Doherty very courageouslywrote letters of apology to his victims. He was released after serving 14 years and read for a degree in English at Trinity College, Dublin.

His book, first published in September 1993 by the Fount imprint of HarperCollins, became an instant bestseller in Ireland, and the film rights were initially bought by Janet Tobias, then one of Diane Sawyer's producers on ABC's Prime Time Live. The book is being re-published in Spain in May 2008 by Libros Libres, and is shortly being made available as an audio book.

There is no doubt that, given his active service record within the IRA, his book and courageous speaking on television and radio about the need to end the armed struggle prepared the ground for activists to embrace the democratic process.

The Irish Times review of the book by Jim Cusack, security correspondent, included the line: "This is the best account of the life of an IRA volunteer yet written."

The Catholic Herald review, by Brian Dooley of Amnesty International, read in part: "No better explanation of why ordinary people turn to terrorism has ever been written. O'Doherty's compelling story is a brilliant, first-hand account of how the boy next door became a bomber. ...O'Doherty traces his early involvement with the IRA with disarming honesty and humour... Most riveting, however, is the story of his disillusion with the romance of republicanism and his complete denunciation of violence. ... The Volunteer is an excellent study of the civilian turned terrorist turned civilian."

Writing the review in The Independent, the European correspondent of the American Christian Science Monitor, Linda Joffee, expressed her view thus: "O'Doherty gives a graphic account of the making of an IRA man. Perhaps the book's greatest strength, and no doubt the feature that, as O'Doherty predicts, will irritate, is the emotional tone in which the story is told. He tells it how he saw and felt it at the time. When he is a stubborn, impetuous youth, he recounts as a stubborn, impetuous youth. When he is a blinkered perpetrator of callous violence, he recounts as a blinkered perpetrator of callous violence. When he becomes an older-but-wiser committed pacifist, the tone shifts yet again to reflect that incarnation."

Helen Suzman: Bright Star in a Dark Chamber, by Robin Renwick

"Helen Suzman was sharp, incisive, principled and loads of fun. So is this biography. . . . Brings Helen Suzman to life."—John Carlin, author of Invictus

Helen Suzman was the voice of South Africa's conscience during the darkest days of apartheid. She stood alone in parliament, confronted by a legion of highly chauvinist male politicians. Armed with the relentless determination and biting wit for which she became renowned, Suzman battled the racist regime and earned her reputation as a legendary anti-apartheid campaigner. Despite constant antagonism and the threat of violence, she forced into the global spotlight the injustices of the country's minority rule.

Access to Suzman's papers, including her unpublished correspondence with Nelson Mandela, was granted by her family to the author, former British ambassador to South Africa Robin Renwick, who has penned a book rich with examples of her humor and political brilliance. This first full biography goes beyond her famous struggle against apartheid into her criticisms of the post-apartheid government. It is a fascinating insight into the life of a truly great South African and her role in one of the most important struggles in modern history.

Robin Renwick, Baron Renwick of Clifton, is a crossbench peer in the House of Lords. He is the author of A Journey with Margaret Thatcher.

Review
"Helen Suzman was sharp, incisive, principled and loads of fun. So is this biography... Brings Helen Suzman to life." John Carlin, Author of Invictus "Robin Renwick was British Ambassador in the 1980s, and writes lucidly and carefully as both friend and historian, taking us through the years of tightening apartheid and its educational, social and domestic repressions. It covers Sharpeville, Soweto, Robben Island and the atrocities and injustices which Suzman fought... as a character she emerges superbly." Libby Purves, The Times "[T]he truest of liberals... this crisp, lucid account is persuasive in presenting her as the doughtiest of fighters for human rights anywhere and one of the finest parliamentarians." The Economist "Robin Renwick's biography brims with anecdotes. In an era of overlong biographies, it shares her fondness for clarity, concision and humour. It is also exquisitely timed... and relevant today." Alec Russell, FT "The new insights that Robin Renwick brings to the extraordinary life and achievements of the late Helen Suzman will help to ensure that this exceptional South African and universally acknowledged human rights campaigner is accorded her rightful place in history." John Battersby, former editor of the Sunday Independent "Wonderfully readable story of someone I think of every day." Helen Zille, Premier of the Western Cape "Lord Renwick has done us all a great service." FW de Klerk "A wonderful book." Peter Bruce, Financial Mail "Timely, easy to read, elegant biography of the redoubtable Helen Suzman." Business Day "This well told story of Lord Renwick's old friend, revered by a whole generation of Robben Islanders, is also the history of the rise and fall of apartheid... brilliant use of vignettes and anecdotes." City Press "A fascinating insight into the life of a truly great South African... Former British Ambassador to South Africa Robin Renwick has penned a book rich with examples of her humour and political brilliance." The South African "A story of sheer political grit, courage and conviction, proving that even in the darkest hour there remain people loyal to their principles." South African Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe "Brilliantly written portrait of an inspiring figure." Mamphela Ramphele "An admirable and affectionate portrait of a remarkable woman." David Welsh, author of The Rise and Fall of Apartheid "A remarkable biography about a memorable woman. As British ambassador to South Africa, Lord Robin Renwick established a lasting friendship with Helen Suzman. Hence the excellence of this biography: the clarity of language, grasp and depth of issues, the human touch that pervades every chapter, and the deceptively easy readability. Coming at a time when liberalism has again come to the forefront of the national debate, it could not have appeared at a better moment." Stanley Uys, veteran South African journalist and political commentator

This book is a fine summary of Helen Suzman's life - a good starting ...
By Jethro
This is more a of a tribute than a biography. It is a long list of highlights of the career of one of the most remarkable politicians of the 20th century. It is unconceivable that South Africa would have made such a smooth transition to democracy without her one-person presence as a Progressive Party MP for 13 years. The columns in the book are narrow. There is a lot of space between the lines. This makes it a quick read. This book is a fine summary of Helen Suzman's life - a good starting place. For insights, go to her memoirs: "In No Uncertain Terms". Her memoirs are the real thing.

A quick summary of Suzman's life and accomplishments
By Gordon Fowler
This a brief but helpful review of Suzman's career, her consistent opposition to apartheid and her equally resolute defense of liberalism in pre- and post-apartheid South Africa.

I grew up being taught that she was wrong, now we know how right she was. Excellent read and insight into her struggle

Exquisite depiction of creatures hungry for lust and speculation
By Aarbaiza
I am not usually a science fiction reader, but this novel really captivated me since the very beginning. The monologues felt real and increasingly connected me with its characters. It has an overall dark aura yet soft edges. NYC is like a partner in crime. The city holds this story together and becomes the perfect scene to portray creatures hungry for lust and speculation. This has to be the best vampire story I've come across. It will test your senses. I also enjoyed its pace and unexpected twirls. I'd say it's a great choice for travelers as the read is intriguing and energizing. I got my hands on it on a long-haul flight and it kept me hooked since the take off. I'm so happy I got it and would definitely recommend it!

Spooky
By The Book Runner
This was a spooky story told in a small town with a haunted movie theatre. Cody became a vampire by buying blood over the internet because he wanted to be strong enough to fight back when his uncle hit him. Relieved and free after murdering him, Cody buys the old theatre and hopes the ghost won't mind. The ghost is a murdered 16 year old girl who leaves her initial in the dust for Cody to see and messages on the bathroom wall in lipstick for his new hired help to see. Cody can't tell if Sonia, the ghost is warning him to stay away from the theatre or if it is something else, but he is determined to stay, even if it means exorcising her. Unfortunately, because he is a vampire, he can't hold the use the traditional methods (priest, holy water, Bible) to get her to leave. Then Sonia attacks his 16 year old worker Ginny and he must choose between the two girls that have gotten his attention.

I only downloaded this because it was free and short. It is just O.K. Not really something I would pay to read or keep on my kindle. Has a "twist" at the ending, but still not a great read.

Would I/Did I buy it? Free Download
Would I listen to it again? No
Would I recommend it to friends? No

Wonderful short story but will leave you hungry for more.
By Steven R. McEvoy
Even though I knew this was a short story, when I hit the end I wanted to know what happens next. I really did not want the story to end. And that is a tribute to the skill of Cynthia Leitich Smith and her mastery as a wordsmith. For fans of Cynthia Leitch Smith's Tantalize, Eternal and Blessed, you will love the story as it just adds to her cannon and we can't help but wonder who the mysterious inline seller of the energy elixir is. For those who have yet to read her works, it will draw you in. Her writings, in this world she created, are very addictive. The other great thing about this free eBook is it has an extended sample of her new book Diabolical. This was a great short story with a really unique twist. Kudos to Cynthia for surprising me yet again. And I am sure it will do the same for you.

Haunting
By Krista "KK" Mounsey
"Haunted Love" is a short story set in a small, run down town in Texas. Cody Stryker, a local, has purchsed the old movie theater, "Old Love" in hopes of reviving it to its former glory. If you believe in ghosts/spirits, it's a great read. Took me about 20 mins to read it, so its a quick read- great for a break from work or a wait at the doctors office. I really enjoyed it, though I'm not sure I would have paid for it....get it while its free!!
